DURBAN CHESS CLUB
Information correct as at February 2020

The Durban Chess Club is open to any member of the general public in Durban. It provides its members with the opportunity of playing competitive chess against some of the best players in Durban.

Details of planned Club events can be found in the club schedule for 2020. Here is the schedule for 2019 for reference purposes. For further information about Club events, contact Desmond (083-7888070).

Club Committee

The club committee is elected every year by the members. At the 2019 Annual General Meeting, Desmond Rooplal was elected as Chairman, Nadean Gopaulsingh as Captain of Play, and Riccardo Benedetti as Secretary.

Directions to the Club

The Club usually meets every week from about 6.45 pm to about 10.30 pm on Thursdays, at the Saint Cyprian's Church hall in Umbilo Road. From the corner of Umbilo Road and Rick Turner (Francois) Road proceed along the right hand side of Umbilo Road past Hannah Road and past Pioneer Road. Look for the AFM Cleantech sign on the left hand side of the road, and the church hall is in the cul-de-sac on the right of Umbilo Road.

Joining the Club

Any interested chess player is welcome to attend the Club for a few evenings to play social chess, before deciding whether to join as a member. However, only Club members may enter rated tournaments at the Club.

The club submits the results of games played in its four major tournaments to CHESS SA (the national organising body of chess in South Africa) for rating purposes. That is 30 games per annum, if you play in all the events. In addition, the club sends in results of rapid and blitz events for rating purposes. Club membership fees do NOT include the cost of CHESS SA membership, which is currently R200 for adults and R100 for juniors. The club's annual membership fees are R400 for both adult and junior members, and we offer a 25% discount for additional family memberships.

Enquiries should be addressed to Desmond Rooplal.
