The Club Championship commenced in March and saw a close race between
the top three finishers. Peter Dankelmann scored an upset win in the
5th round with the Black pieces against defending champion Keith Rust,
and was the joint leader after 8 rounds with 5½ points from 7 games
(with a postponed game against Julian Thorpe in hand).
Joining him in the lead was Ashley Lewis, also on 5½ points, but with
a totally won adjournment against Cyril Danisa up his sleeve, and Keith
Rust, on the same score but with a drawish looking Rook and Pawn ending
to finish against Bongani Mgaga.
In a dramatic last round Ashley drew with Julian, and then watched as
Keith swindled a point from Cyril. The last game to finish was Peter's
game against championship debutant, Luke Adamson, who sacrificed several
pieces in a successful attempt to mate Peter in an exciting time scramble.
When all the games were finished, there was a tie for first place on 7
points. Ashley is to be congratulated on his maiden Championship title,
and on being the only player to remain undefeated.

The Candidates section was convincingly won by Ashish Ramsurrup
with 8½ points out of 9 games, improving on his position as runner
up to John Blackburn in 2005. In the Premier section Sayen Naidu
won with 6½ points out of 8 games, and new member Philip Rodda won
the Reserves tournament with a fine 8 out of 9.
The 2006 UNITE Kwa-Zulu Natal Open took place on the long weekend of
29th April to 1st May. There was a triple tie for first place on 7 out
of 8 between Keith Rust, Jason Subke, and Lulama Qobo.
Here are the final results.
The Third Swiss was won by Keith Rust with 5 out of 6, ahead of
Bongani Mgaga, Ahdir Puran and Mageshan Pillay on 4½ points.
Upset of the tournament was Mageshan's surprise win against Ashley
Lewis in the last round. Ashley was the exchange ahead for nothing,
but stumbled into a mating net to end on 4 points.
The Second Swiss was won by visiting master Aminul Islam (6 out of 7)
followed by Keith Rust on 5½ points. Amin actually scored 6/6 as
he was unable to play in the 6th round. Amin has a FIDE rating of just
over 2300 and is one of the strongest players in Bangladesh.
The first Swiss tournament of the year was won by Keith Rust on 7½
out of 8, followed by Ashley Lewis on 6 points and Bongani Mgaga on 5½
points. Keith beat both Ashley and Bongani, dropping only ½ point to
student Prenthan Chetty, who went on to tie for second place in the B section
of the Club championships.
